  1. 1.Brazil announces new import tax rules for cross-border online purchases

 

According to the new import tax rules for cross-border online purchases announced by the Brazilian Ministry of Finance, from 1 August, orders generated on cross-border e-commerce platforms that have joined the Brazilian government's Remessa Conforme programme and that amount to no more than US$50 will be exempted from import tax, or else they will be subject to a 60% import tax.

 

This year, the Ministry of Finance has repeatedly said that it would abolish the tax exemption policy for cross-border online purchases of US$50 or less, but due to pressure from all sides, the ministry has decided to strengthen the supervision of major platforms while maintaining the existing tax exemption rules.

 

  1. 2.South Sudan makes certificates of conformity mandatory for imported goods

 

The Minister of Trade and Industry of South Sudan issued an order requiring the mandatory issuance of pre-importation standard certificates for all goods entering South Sudan. All importers, traders and exporters will be required to present the Certificate of Conformity for Goods (COC) and import/export licences before their goods arrive at border posts for clearance, or face a fine equivalent to 40 per cent of the value of the goods.

 

This mandatory COC has been implemented on 21 June 2023 at all border points.
